Why community storytelling matters: IFI's editorial approach

November 11, 20245 min readIFI Editorial Team

An inside look at how IFI approaches storytelling, prioritizing personal voice, dignity, consent, and specific outcomes over savior narratives.

Storytelling is not neutral. The way a story is told, who tells it, what is included, what is left out, and how the subject is portrayed, shapes how the audience understands the people and communities involved. IFI takes this responsibility seriously. Its editorial approach is built on principles designed to honor the dignity, agency, and voice of every person whose story is shared.

First person voice is the foundation. Whenever possible, IFI prioritizes stories told by the people who lived them, in their own words, with their own framing, and with their consent. This does not mean every story is a personal essay, but it does mean that the perspective, language, and priorities of the subject guide the narrative. IFI avoids speaking for communities; it creates platforms for communities to speak for themselves.

Dignity is non negotiable. IFI does not use poverty porn, savior narratives, or imagery that portrays communities as helpless or passive. Every person is treated as a valued partner in change, a learner, leader, creator, entrepreneur, volunteer, or changemaker. The language is specific, human, and respectful. The images are authentic, not staged. The goal is to portray people and communities with the complexity and agency they deserve.

Consent and verification are essential. Before any story, photograph, testimonial, or quote is published, IFI seeks consent from the people involved. Names, images, quotes, and identifying details are used only with permission. Quotes from existing IFI material are preserved in meaning but checked for accuracy, punctuation, and spelling. No statistic, award, partnership, or outcome is published without verification.

The structure of IFI's program stories follows a clear pattern: what happened, why it matters, and how to participate. This structure keeps stories grounded, purposeful, and connected to opportunity. It ensures that every story not only informs but invites the reader to engage, to volunteer, donate, partner, share, or join. Storytelling, for IFI, is not an end in itself. It is a pathway to participation.
