Jeshwang Media Hub: empowering youth through digital storytelling

In Jeshwang, a community in The Gambia, young people are picking up cameras, learning editing software, and telling stories that matter to them. The Jeshwang Media Hub is a creative space where youth develop digital media skills, explore entrepreneurship, and amplify community voices through storytelling.

The hub offers training in video production, photography, digital content creation, and storytelling. Participants learn by doing, producing real content, collaborating on projects, and developing portfolios that showcase their work. The goal is not just technical skill but creative confidence: the ability to tell a story, share a perspective, and connect with an audience.

Entrepreneurship is woven into the hub's approach. Young people learn how media skills can translate into income, through freelance work, content creation, small business marketing, and creative services. By combining media training with business fundamentals, the hub helps participants see storytelling not just as a craft but as a livelihood.

Cultural collaboration is at the center of the hub's identity. The Jeshwang Media Hub is connected to IFI's broader network, including the Minnesota Media Hub and the Global Creator Exchange. Through these connections, participants in The Gambia collaborate with creators in Minnesota and beyond, sharing stories, learning from one another, and building cultural understanding.

The hub is still growing, and its impact will be measured in the stories told, the skills gained, and the opportunities created. For the young people of Jeshwang, the media hub is more than a program, it is a space where community, creativity, and opportunity meet.
