Young entrepreneurs turn ideas into action with IFI support
Business training, financial literacy, and mentorship are helping young people in Minnesota and West Africa launch small businesses and build economic opportunity.
Entrepreneurship is one of IFI's six focus areas, and it is where education, workforce development, and community opportunity converge. Through business training, financial literacy workshops, mentorship, and startup support, IFI helps young people turn ideas into action, building skills, confidence, and economic opportunity along the way.
In Minnesota, IFI's entrepreneurship programs connect young people with business fundamentals: how to develop an idea, understand a market, manage money, and build a sustainable plan. In West Africa, similar programs help young entrepreneurs access training, mentorship, and networks that might otherwise be out of reach. The approach is the same in both places: equip people with knowledge, connect them with mentors and peers, and support them as they take their first steps.
Financial literacy is a cornerstone of the program. Many young people have ideas and energy but limited exposure to budgeting, cash flow, pricing, or financial planning. IFI's workshops and mentorship sessions address these fundamentals in plain, practical language, helping participants make informed decisions as they build their ventures.
Mentorship adds the human element. Experienced entrepreneurs, business owners, and community leaders share their knowledge, offer feedback, and help young people navigate the challenges of starting something new. These relationships often last beyond the formal program, creating a network of support that continues to grow.
IFI does not promise funding or guaranteed success. What it offers is preparation, connection, and encouragement, the tools a young entrepreneur needs to take a risk worth taking. As the program grows, IFI will continue to build partnerships with organizations that can provide additional resources, grants where available, and pathways to small business development.
